PC4G

Date:
Wed, 24/11/2010 - 9:00am - 4:00pm

The PC4G is a challenge for year 10 girls using the ALICE program. The
organisation is all manned by volunteers who are keen on spreading the
message that this branch of technology is good for girls too.

It is a day long event, involving tuition and practice for teams of 2
girls, and their teacher, followed by morning tea. The girls then sit
a two and a half hour challenge, while the teachers have some
Professional development time.
At the end of the challenge, the work is graded into gold/silver/
bronze/participation. While the judging happens there is lunch and
about 45 minutes of some activity chosen by the site to be engaging
for teachers and students. Then the prizegiving to finish off the day.
Medals and prizes are awarded to gold, silver, bronze students.

Sites for the challenge  are set up to accept up to 2 teams of 2 girls
from a school. But there is the possibility to say you would like to
bring more. Different sites will have different limits on the total
number they can take.

This year we have sites at

AUT (jointly hosted by AUT and Unitec),
Manukau Institute of Technology,
Wintec in Hamilton,
Tairawhiti Poly in Gisborne,
Victoria in Wellingon,
Canterbury University in Christchurch and
Otago Poly in Dunedin.

(We also have a site in Canada and we're hoping for at least one in
Australia)

The web site is now ready for registrations. (Thanks to Ron Elder from
Gisborne Girls High who spent much of these holidays getting it ready,
and to Russ Holland from E-C in Gisborne who has ensured the site is
hosted and built)

Go to www.pc4g.org.nz and click on the Registration tab.

Information on each site will be added to as the sites provide it (eg:
what the PD will be for teachers, what building to go to etc. etc.)

The institutions involved are all sponsoring this by providing labs,
staff, food. Some of them are providing prizes, but some are
struggling with this aspect. If you know of any IT companies in your
area who might like to donate money or prizes, please let your site
coordinator know. (Their names and contact details are on the
individual pages of the website)

Cheers, Margot
