OTIC - Otago Technology Innovation Challenge

The Otago Technology Innovation Challenge is an annual one day event organised by the Information Science Department in the School of Business at the University of Otago. Teams of three Year 12 and 13 students are invited to spend the day being exposed to the latest research being undertaken in the Information Science Department.

The day begins with presentations from staff, who give an overview of their research areas and describe the particular technologies that the students will be working with for the day. Student teams are then challenged to develop an innovative idea around the use of one or more of these technologies. The day culminates with the student teams presenting their innovative idea to a panel of judges from industry and academia. Prizes are up for grabs.

High School Programming Contest

The New Zealand Programming Contest is open to high school students.
It is held at tertiarys (typically in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill although other centres may host it this year).
The contest is planned for Saturday August 11th this year and is effectively a whole day event, although the contest proper is 5 hours from 1 to 6pm. Students compete in teams of 3.

The problems are in 4 groups of 4 problems each. Those worth 3 points, those worth 10 points, those worth 30points and those worth 100 points. High school students should be able to manage 3 point problems by the end of year 11 programming , but those with a thirst, or doing
year 12 this year, should manage the 10 point problems.

This year we are inviting high school teachers to submit 10 point problems. The problems must have integer or text  input and integer or text output. To see the level of difficulty of a ten point problem, go
to http://www.webdev.aut.ac.nz/NZPC/Contest/Archive.aspx and click on one of the 4 years. The zip file will contain all the problem statements. Typically problems A through D are worth 3 points and E
through H are ten point problems.

A problem submitted for inclusion must adhere to the following:
The problems must have integer or text input and integer or text output (ie: no reals)
It must not have been seen by your students
It must have solution code in one language submitted with the problem statement.
It must have sample input and output submitted.
(The organisers will create Judges data)

The author of any problem accepted for inclusion in the contest will be awarded a voucher (petrol book etc.) worth $50, although you will not be notified of this until after the contest.

Zip your problem statement, code file and sample input and output into one file and attach it to an email to the contest director, Phil Robbins at AUT - phil.robbins@aut.ac.nz

The final date for submissions is Friday July 6 (the end of the first week of the 2nd term holidays)
