Review and Reconsiderations for external results
External assessment results
In January, students can access a Result Notice, which provides results for internal and external assessment from the previous year. These results are available online, but hard-copies can be ordered before 31 December of the year in which the results were gained.
Students have the right to request:
- a review, if a processing error has occurred or
- a reconsideration, if they believe an error in marking has occurred.
For more information, see Reviews and reconsiderations.
Reviews and reconsiderations
Closing Date for applications is 17th of February 2012.
Candidates may apply for a review or reconsideration of their results for externally assessed standards.
Assessment reports and schedules
The assessment reports contain summary comments from markers to candidates, assessors and other interested parties. Their purpose is to give an overview of achievement and provide guidance to enable more candidates to achieve. The assessment schedules give examples of expected responses - they are sometimes called the 'marking schedule' or 'the answers'. To view assessment reports and schedules, see NCEA subject resources.
National statistics are included in these documents.
Judgement statements
For externally assessed achievement standards, answer booklets are returned to students. For Graphics, the portfolio is returned to the school.
To help students understand how their results were arrived at, the judgement statements used by markers are made available on this website. Judgement statements are a summary of the number of correct answers needed to reach the standard. To view the judgement statement for a standard, see NCEA subject resources.
Apply for a review or reconsideration
After looking closely at your answer booklets or portfolios, you may want to apply for a review or reconsideration of your results.
Note: Answer booklets or portfolios that have been changed in any way, or contain correcting fluid or pencil, will not be eligible for review or reconsideration. They may be investigated as a breach of examination rules, and some or all of your results may be cancelled.
Review
If you think there has been a processing error, such as one or more unmarked sections in your booklet or portfolio, or the incorrect transfer of grades, you may request a review.
A review involves checking that all sections of the booklet or portfolio have been assessed and the results have been correctly recorded and transferred. It does not involve re-marking the script.
There is no charge for a review.
To apply for a review:
- Download and print the "Request Review application form" from your Learner Login.
- Read the instructions on the form, complete the relevant sections, and ensure that you sign the form.
Remember to include all booklets for which you are requesting a review. - Send your application to NZQA by the due date noted on the Application for Review Form. If it is not received by NZQA by this date the application will not be processed.
Note: If you try to apply for a Reconsideration using the Review application form your request for Reconsideration will not be processed.
Reconsideration
If you think your answer booklet has not been assessed (or 'marked') correctly, you can apply for a reconsideration.
A reconsideration involves reassessing all answers in the answer booklet using the original assessment schedule - in other words re-marking it - and also checking mechanical processes, like transferring grades.
The cost is $20.00 for each booklet to be reconsidered. This fee will be refunded if the grade changes.
To apply for a reconsideration:
- Download and print the "Request Reconsideration application form" from your Learner Login.
- Read the instructions on the form, complete the relevant sections, and ensure that you sign the form. Remember to include all booklets for which you are requesting a reconsideration.
- Send it with payment and relevant answer booklet/s to NZQA by the due date noted on the Reconsideration Application Form. If it is not received by NZQA by this date the application will not be processed.
For further information on the process to follow to apply for a review or a reconsideration, see Assessment and Examination Rules and Procedures for Secondary Schools - 2011.
